Open and Closed-Ended Interview Questions


1. Closed-ended interview questions

Usually a simple yes or no interview question that requires informational answers. Recruiters ask these questions to quickly gain factual information. These questions are asked especially when trying to elicit specific information or set the stage for more complex questions.


Here are some sample closed-ended interview questions:

  • "How many years did you work for your last employer?"

  • "What's the longest you've worked for any employer?"

  • "Are you comfortable working in a team?"

  • "Do you have much experience with data entry?"


2. Open-ended interview questions

These interview questions demand thought, compelling the job seekers to disclose their opinions. Often, hiring managers manager will ask a behavioral questions throughout the interview related to past on-the-job experiences to situations likely to happen again in the new position.


Here are sample open-ended interview questions:

  • "Why do you want to work for this company?"

  • "What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?"

  • "What's the biggest challenge you've ever faced in any job?"

  • "What direction do you see your career taking in five years?"
