Your Elevator Pitch

Updated: May 30, 2021

CRAFTING YOUR ELEVATOR PITCH

A scripted introduction used as a formal response when describing yourself in a professional setting. A great "elevator pitch" is between 30 seconds - 1.5 minutes long.

An "elevator pitch" should include some of the following:

  • HOW YOUR "KEY SKILLS" DEFINE YOU.

  • THE VALUE/BENEFIT YOU BRING TO A COMPANY.

  • HOW YOU CREATE RESULTS FOR THE COMPANY.

  • IT SHOULD ROLL OF YOUR TONGUE AND BE NATURAL.

  • WHAT IT IS YOU DO, WHAT MAKES YOU UNIQUE?

  • WHAT IS THE VALUE/RESULT YOUR SKILLS BRING THE COMPANY?

  • WHERE DO YOU WANT TO WORK NEXT?

  • WHAT "TARGET COMPANIES" HAVE YOU IDENTIFIED?

Example:

"Hello, my name is YOUR NAME. I am (the/a) JOB TITLE, (at/with/for) EMPLOYER NAME, where I JOB DESCRIPTION, for RECIPIENT OF SERVICE. Currently, I am seeking CAREER GOAL."

Use an elevator pitch when introducing yourself in an interview or while networking. Developing your pitch is one of the first steps towards enhancing your professional image! Simplifying your purpose, into a clear and concise, summary, allows recruiters or others to ask specific questions and eliminates sharing unnecessary information about yourself.

Rehearsing your pitch is a GREAT way to become most comfortable with describing yourself to others. Practicing in front of either someone else, or the mirror is highly recommended. Once you have perfected your pitch, you will feel more comfortable when asked the most common first interview question, "So, tell me a little bit about yourself."

Tip: Keep it short, sweet and straight to the point!
